Minister for Lands Housing and Urban Development outlines vision to transform Malawi's Land Sector

Minister of Lands, Housing and Urban Development Honourable Chimwemwe Chipungu, MP,  has outlined his vision to transform Malawi’s land sector, with a focus on improving land ownership, developing smart cities and attracting local and international investment.

Speaking during Malawi Broadcasting Corporation (MBC) Television's 365 Cabinet Review, on Saturday, Chipungu acknowledged that the ministry was facing challenges inherited from the previous administration, but said his priority was to address them.

Chipungu said he aspired to see Malawi develop into a modern and well-planned country, drawing inspiration from Singapore’s urban development model.

"My vision includes developing smart cities across the country and strengthening secondary cities to improve urban planning, infrastructure and living conditions in districts," he said.

The minister also highlighted efforts to make land ownership more accessible and efficient through district councils, quality assurance officers and the deployment of land clerks equipped with necessary gadgets to support land registration processes at the local level.

He said improving land administration was essential to ensuring that Malawians could access and register land more easily while reducing disputes arising from land ownership.

“We want land in Malawi to be a source of security and opportunity, not a source of conflict and disagreement,” Chipungu said.

He further expressed his ambition to create a modern and investor-friendly Malawi capable of attracting both local and international investors, while promoting orderly urbanisation and sustainable development.

Chipungu said he wanted his legacy as Minister to be defined by his contribution to advancing President Peter Mutharika’s vision and transforming the country’s land sector for the benefit of present and future generations.
